Associate Director of Student Ministry

Full-Time Student Ministry 40 Hours

Objective
The Associate Director of Student Ministries role is to help implement the vision and mission of the Student Ministry. This person helps to oversee ministries to youth within the church, specifically our 6th-12th graders, as well as their families. This person will organize and facilitate the discipleship, missions, pastoral care opportunities for youth at Northside Church. They need to be gifted in curriculum selection, resourcing small groups, empowering volunteers, and tending to discipleship ministries. They will be responsible for helping bring to fruition the vision of the Director of Student Ministries and help lead the efforts in creating spaces and moments for people all while leading students into growing relationships with Jesus. They will organize, empower, and execute mission trips for youth in partnership with the Missions Pastor. The Associate Director will help provide pastoral care for youth and families. This individual will also balance work within the church with being an active part of youth activities outside the church walls attending events in the community including sports events, recitals, FCA, etc.

The ideal Associate Director will:

• Exemplify a contagious enthusiasm for Christ and youth.
• Be grounded in Christian theology and Methodist/Wesleyan doctrine.
• Embrace a commitment for long-term planning and implementation of Northside UMC’s Student ministry.
• Have the ability to function as part of a team in the wider circle of ministry (staff, volunteers, and lay leadership).
• Have the ability to coordinate with volunteers to implement all aspects of the ministry.

 

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of relational ministry to middle and high school students; well-informed about current adolescent culture and issues

  • Knowledge of implementation of various programs, including community service programs, social justice programs, retreats, immersion programs, and liturgical ministry

  • Knowledge of the United Methodist Church beliefs, doctrines, discipline, traditions, and social principles

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and lead Student Ministries Sunday School classes

  • Oversee Small Group Ministries within Student Ministries include recruiting and supporting Volunteer Leaders

  • Lead High and Middle School Girls Outreach

  • Coordinate and implement Local and Global mission opportunities for students

  • Help provide pastoral care for students and families

  • Handle weekly administrative tasks as assigned by the Director of Youth Ministry and in partnership with the Administrative Assistant

  • Help Create, Manage, and Work within the Youth Budget

  • Work with the Student Ministries Team to help implement the Vision and Mission of the Youth Ministry

  • Attend Workshops and Conferences to continue growth in the field of Youth Ministry

  • Connect and communicate effectively with youth, adults, and families concerning spiritual matters

  • Be a creative, dependable, and energetic self-starter who sees youth ministry as a calling

  • Be strong in organization, delegation, and planning skills for ministries and programs

  • Model a personal and growing relationship with Jesus and perform all other duties as assigned by Director of Student Ministries

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Ability to create energy and understand the value of both fun and depth in discipling students

  • Communicates effectively with parents, youth, and volunteers

  • Ability to create and write curriculum or find new curriculum that is engaging to youth

  • Appropriate engages Social Media and Graphic Design Skills

  • Utilizes Office and Administrative skills (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pro Presenter, Planning Center, Canva, ACS, Outlook)

  • Ability to Manage and work with a Student Ministry Staff and a large team of volunteers among a large church staff

  • Being able to communicate effectively and clearly to multiple groups

 

Education and Experience

  • College or Seminary degree

  • Experience of at least 2 years in full-time Youth ministry, preferably in a large context

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; bend and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machines, calculators, the telephone and other office and/or clerical equipment. Requires normal range of hearing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Work Environment

The employee is regularly in a typical office environment with adequate light and moderate noise levels. No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions. Airconditioned buildings; tile, concrete and carpeted floors; adjustable workstation with ergonomic keyboard is provided.

The office environment is fast-paced and may be considered stressful, due to seemingly regular interruptions because of numerous urgent and unexpected requests that requires multi-tasking. This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday.  Occasional evening and weekend work will be required as job duties demand.

Children’s Ministry Elementary Associate

Objective

The Children’s Ministry Elementary Associate role helps further the mission and vision of Children’s Ministry at Northside. This person will be an integral part of the Children’s team and will serve our elementary-aged children. This person will have a curriculum focus helping to plan, edit, execute, and teach Sunday school classes and other faith-based programming. They need to be a strong writer, communicator, team player, and positive reflection of God’s love. They are responsible for helping bring the vision of the Children’s Ministry Department to life while leading and creating spaces for children to develop into faithful disciples.

 

The ideal Children’s Ministry Associate will:

  • Be a strong team player and have the ability to function well with the wider circle of Northside staff and community.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Develops, edits, writes, and prepares curriculum, lessons, and Sunday school classrooms for elementary grades. This includes resourcing volunteers with lesson and setting up classrooms for Sunday.

  • Oversees worship bags and resources for elementary-aged students. This includes: filling bags with age-appropriate activity and coloring pages, items like crayons or seasonal toys, and restocking worship bag carts.

  • Develops, plans, prepares, and executes engaging faith-based Milestones appropriate for elementary grades.

  • Helps develop and create the calendar for Children’s Ministry programming including scheduling of special events.

  • Creates plan for VBS rotations including idea generation, purchasing, making, preparing, and resourcing volunteers with detailed instructions.

  • Work collaboratively on all special events.

  • Serves as a present and engaging team member on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings, Friday events, and other Northside Church offerings when needed. 

  • Resources children and parents for worshipping as a family.

  • Maintains “Parent Resource Corner” in Children’s Ministry area with developmentally appropriate faith resources for families. 

  • Engages in purchasing for the department with Administrative Assistant.

  • Helps maintain our internal and external area, as well as monitoring facility use and damage, needs for replacement, safety, and cleanliness.  Concerns should be brought to the Director or Assistant Director as soon as possible. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Pastor of Children’s Ministry or Associate Director of Children’s Ministry, Senior Pastor, or others in leadership positions on our staff.

 

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the United Methodist Church beliefs, doctrines, discipline, traditions, and social principles

  • Knowledge of the culture and values of Northside Church, articulates and supports its mission and direction; and demonstrates through words and actions the love of God

  • Child development and classroom management

  • Knowledge of the UMC’s Safe Sanctuary guidelines

 

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Willing to create new faith formation opportunities for elementary-aged children

  • This position requires proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook applications, along with general computer knowledge. Experience with Google Drive, Mailchimp, Wufoo, ACS, and Planning Center is helpful.

  • Must have a current driver’s license

 

Education and Experience

  • Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Christian Education, Education or related field or

  • three years’ combination of education and experience commensurate with the minimum requirements of this position

Student Ministry Summer Internship

Student Ministry & Metro Atlanta Project 15 Hours

Objective 

The role of the Student Ministry summer interns is to engage our middle and high school youth in the life of the church, including weekly Bible studies, fellowship, special events, and ultimately Metro Atlanta Project (MAP).  

The ideal candidate is relational and community-minded, has a passion for mentoring youth in their faith journey, and can reliably execute basic administrative duties. 

 

Job Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Work with the Student Ministry Director to plan games and activities for teens 

  • Attend and help facilitate Wednesday evening student Bible study and Sunday evening youth group 

  • Attend and help facilitate various special events for middle and high school youth 

  • Make connections and develop faith-based relationships with youth 

  • Facilitate a welcoming and hospitable space for all youth  

  • Support the Metro Atlanta Project Director on mission project details including organizing supplies, event logistics, youth registration, and volunteer communication 

  • Be present and engaged during MAP week, July 14-19 

  • Purchase supplies and submit receipts as needed 

  • Must complete and comply with Safe Sanctuary Training (facilitated by Northside Church) 

Skills & Qualifications 

  • Must be 18+ years old 

  • Communicates effectively and appropriately with youth, parents, volunteers, and church staff 

  • Appropriately engages social media 

  • Basic computer and administrative abilities
